Late in 1970’s, the shoe industry in USA had started its decline and almost total elimination. Two countries, Korea and Taiwan were coming on strong, especially in shoe parts and cement-constructed footwear. Brooks Running Shoes, despite their popularity, were in trouble due principally to poor quality from its sources in the Caribbean Islands.  Bankruptcy followed and Wolverine World Wide (WWW) stepped in to buy the assets. 

As the owner and operator of Eastbay Running Stores, as a marathon runner and with extensive shoe manufacturing knowledge, David Hill was asked by Tom Gleason, CEO of WWW to help as a consultant. I accepted and was soon visiting Taiwan and Korea to help explore shoe-manufacturing possibilities. The original three week agreement extended into 3 years during which David Hill was basically responsible for creating the Brooks Chariot, probability the most successful running shoe ever created.

In the early 1980’s, we began sourcing footwear components as well as complete shoes, principally from Taiwan. We were then approached by K-Swiss and asked to work with them in sourcing their footwear. During this tenure, K-Swiss grew from US$20,000,000.00 to US$140,000,000.00. This last two years of this relationship, K-Swiss was awarded best quality footwear by both Tennis Magazine and Footwear News.

D&N expanded into hardware, cooperating with companies such as Kohler, etc. This division has also supplied wire harnesses for John Deere tractors, ice augers for Whirlpool and die cast monitor mounts that are in the Apple Store. 

Two years ago we began working with an innovative shoe concept and today we source various models of Altra Footwear, recently voted “Most Innovative” by Runner’s World magazine.     Back
